02.04  Expand sub section  Beta-adrenoceptor blocking drugs
 note 

Agents with ISA activity are not recommended post MI or in ACS etc as the mortality benefit seen with other beta blockers is lacking with these agents

STOPP v2 recommendation
  • Beta-blocker inappropriate to use in patients aged 65 years and older in combination with verapamil or diltiazem (risk of heart block) or with bradycardia (< 50/min), type II heart block or complete heart block - risk of complete heart block, asystole)
  • Non-selective beta-blocker (whether oral or topical for glaucoma) inappropriate to use in patients aged 65 years and older with a history of asthma requiring treatment (risk of increased bronchospasm)
  • in diabetes mellitus with frequent hypoglycaemic episodes (risk of suppressing hypoglycaemic symptoms).
